Character Name Resources

One of the questions that come up often is how to find names for your characters.

We have a lot of fantastic resources that we use, here are a few of them.

  • Baby Name Books – there are websites for baby names, however when I’m really stuck, I open a baby name book and put my finger down and see what name is chosen. Sometimes it works and an amazing name is found, and sometimes I need to try again. You can often pick up baby name books in a bargain bin at bookshops or newsagents, and even at op shops or second hand book shops.
  • Fantasy Name Generators – this is one of my favourite websites for finding a name. There are so many options for name suggestions, not only for characters, but also for place names and more.
  • Name Combiner – if you’re looking for a unique name for your character, try a name combiner. Put in two names or two words and the combiner will give you some name suggestions based on those words. This can also work for surnames and place names. It can be a bit hit and miss, but it’s a lot of fun.
  • Social Media – if you are on social media, you can find inspiration by scrolling through your newsfeed and see what names jump out at you. You may even find a name that is similar to what you’re looking for, or a couple of names to put in the name combiner.
  • Name Notebook – I have a notebook where I jot down interesting names that I hear around the place. When I’m stuck for a character name, I dig it out and see if there is a name that fits. The more names in the notebook, the more likely I’ll be able to find a name, or get inspiration for a name.

These are just a few resources to help you find a name for your characters. Let us know if there are any other resources you use to name your characters.
